PND Borders celebrates sponsored walk success

PND Borders recently received a very generous donation as a result of an event organised by a local woman from Galashiels. Johanna McLeod inspired twenty people to join her on a 13 mile walk to raise funds for this vital service.

Sponsored walkProudly wearing PND Borders T-shirts, Johanna and her husband David led the group of mums, dads, grandparents and children from Niki’s Bar in Galashiels to the Boglieburn near Newstead and back again. The youngest person to take part was 5 year old Jamie-lee McKenna who managed to walk twelve miles. Niki Fitzgerald from Niki’s Bar kindly kept the walkers well fuelled with bacon rolls along the way and welcome plates of stovies at the finish line.

The group raised an amazing £1502.40 which was presented to PND Treasurer, Barbara Wright who was delighted with this achievement. Johanna says: “I myself have been recently affected by postnatal depression and if this service and the support of the Health Visitors hadn’t been available to me and my family I don’t know where we would actually be now. Postnatal depression, as we have found out, doesn’t just affect the mother but the husband, children and immediate family members too. I knew near the end of my therapy that I wanted to put something back into the service so it can help other families who may in the future find themselves in the same situation.”

“I would like to take this opportunity personally to thank everyone who joined us on the walk. The weather turned out fine with a little shower of rain at the half way stage. The walk turned out to be a great success which also included mums with buggies.”

“We plan to organise another sponsored activity at around the same time of year this year and would like a few more people to join in. If anyone would be interested in joining us or just taking a sponsor sheet and collecting sponsors then look out for further information or posters nearer the time.”

Barbara says: “This is a wonderful event that Johanna organised and we are very grateful to her and her family and friends for all the effort they put in. To receive such a large donation is a great boost to our service and they should all be very proud of what they achieved. Our sincere thanks go to all who took part, supported and worked so hard to achieve this fantastic success on behalf of PND Borders.”
