Big Lottery Fund Award benefits Mums across the Borders

PND Borders, a Counselling and Art Therapy service for mothers diagnosed with postnatal depression, is delighted to have been awarded £150,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

Following increasing demand over the last few years, this invaluable local service, which is based in Galashiels, has been steadily growing and expanding to meet the needs of new mothers. Depression and anxiety affect between 10-15% of women during pregnancy and in the first postnatal year. Maternal mental health can have a significant impact on young families so it is important that mothers are seen as quickly as possible.

Receiving the Big Lottery Fund grant provides a sound financial base to secure the future of PND Borders which Health Visitors and GPs across the Borders access to support their patients who have postnatal depression. The grant will help significantly to reduce increasing waiting lists and times, providing early intervention and prevention.

Barbara Wright, Chair of PND Borders said: “We are delighted to receive this award from the Big Lottery Fund. As a charity which receives no government funding, we rely on grants to enable us to continue to provide a vital service to local families affected by postnatal depression. The award of the Big Lottery Fund grant secures the future of the service for the next three years, and will enable us to grow and develop to benefit new mothers and their families across the Borders.”

PND Borders is currently open two days per week.  Clients receive individual and/or group therapy over 12 to 30 weeks depending upon their needs. To help make it easier for mothers to attend appointments, a crèche is provided which is supported by a team of trained volunteers. Infant massage sessions are also available to mums and their new babies and a Partner Support Worker provides additional support for partners to help them understand this illness.

Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn, said: “I am delighted that PND Borders has been successful in securing a Big Lottery Fund grant. The funding will make a big difference where it is needed most and I wish PND Borders every success as it goes on to develop and expand its project for the benefit of their local community.”
